She didn't always have such restraint. She didn't always hold back so much.
She used to run wild, passion carrying her off and leaving her breathless. She used to forget the consequences and dive head-long into the deep well of wanting.
But all it got her was a child and parental disdain.
All she got was years alone, struggling and fighting and forcing a smile in lieu of burning anger.
Rafe was a balm during those hard times, sweetness on his sticky kid face and a reminder of all that could be bright in this world. After that, all Natalia had was God.
God listened and God forgave her and God gave her peace and God showed her right from wrong.
All those words that revealed truth and devotion, they would run over her skin like water and Natalia found solace in God's light.
She thought nothing could be as good, nothing could be as sure and simple.
And Natalia was right, at least part of the way.
Nothing could be as simple as God's love... but something could be as good, as real, as amazing and uplifting and strong. Someone could be just as important.
Father Ray's eyes don't dance and his lips don't smirk. But his face is never shuttered, never closed-off and hard. He lurks somewhere in between shock and resignation, somewhere between heaven and hell.
And Natalia holds her breath. And Natalia waits for the earth to crack, to swallow her and send her to a fiery demise.
And Natalia waits for the skies to part, to envelope her in heat and pull her up to paradise.
When Father Ray smiles gently, Natalia feels something deep inside let go.
And within her heart, a sixteen year old girl takes flight.
