Author’s note: Well since you all seem to have Birthdays around the same days, you’re all going to kill me, ;]. But I have to say it is always fun for me to write and I find that it is a pleasure to write birthday fic, because it lasts so much longer then virtual gifts. I just hope you like it. But anyway Happy Birthday carlyisnot. I hope you have a happy and fantastic day.
Rating: pg-15, Swearing like a sailor on leave… ;]
Summary: Emily finds someone she hasn’t seen in 11 years. A different world from Criminal Minds as we know it, besides Emily/JJ being together I have changed a bit to fit the story but it is all in good fun so please don’t hate or sue me for it I own none of the characters, show, etc.Disclaimer: Not mine, the song and characters belong to someone else. But you all can thank carlyisnot for the inspiration and for being born on May 3. Oh and major angst, as requested so I hope you all can handle it. ;] Oh and self beta, again b-day fic so I will try to do daily updates.
Emily hadn’t taken any rest on the way up here, it was a straight shot and close to a ten hour drive, well at least she did it in ten hours. The whole time she was thinking about the second to last time she saw her daughter, who hadn’t changed. It broke Emily’s heart because it was her fault that her daughter was in that position. And now she could never make it up to her.
Ten years ago…
Emily was going down to see her daughter, the daughter she was forced to give up. Her mother won’t allow her to keep her, and even though she tried to run her mother found her and dragged her back. She loved her daughter but Emily wasn’t even close to being ready to take care of a child. Now Emily was going to a jail to help the family who adopted her daughter bail Carlina out, since they fell into some rough times they asked for some help financial to get their daughter out of jail. Emily went down right away, she knew that the new receptionist was so mad that Emily listened in but she would go through hell and back to protect her daughter.
As she arrived to the station she had no idea what she was walking into but she saw the woman who was Carlina’s mother. She was just leaving, Emily was about to ask where she was going, but as soon as she saw Emily coming she responded, clearly drunk.
“She’s all yours…you tell her if she wants to come home that she will never bite the hand the feeds her again, or else.” Karen Coldwell said as she left. She could care less what happened to that girl now, she not only was the sole reason why her husband left her, she also caused more trouble and hardship then she was worth. The only reason she kept her around was the check that came in the mail. It kept her afloat, ‘and if that damn girl wasn’t such a bitch, I would have more goddamn money.’ She thought as she went by the one who gave birth to her. She wanted to say she could have her back, but then she wouldn’t have a home anymore.
Emily kept walking, going straight to the officer at the front desk, she was still somewhat new in the FBI but she had confidence and a commanding presence, that she use to get people to respond to her. She knew it would come in handy especially at this station, where they were clearly undermanned. “I am looking for Carlina Coldwell, I am here to pay her bail.” Emily said as she brought out her check book. She had no idea what had happened in her daughter’s life, but right now she just wanted to get her out of here and somewhere safe. ‘She was only 12 years old, why the hell was she here?’ Emily thought to herself.
“Yeah that bitch was a riley one, had to knock her out just to calm her the fuck down.” The officer said behind the guy at the desk. He had to admit she was stronger then she looked.
“Well that girl is 12 and my daughter…so I would appreciate if you didn’t call her a bitch.” Emily said giving this guy a look that could kill. She could see him knock the macho crap off. She was completely focused at cutting this asshole down and almost didn’t realize that the guy behind the desk was talking to her.
“Well she’s in detox, so it will be a few hours. Heroine…so it will take almost all night. I would suggest getting a motel and come back in the morning. If they don’t take her to the hospital you can take her as soon as she is done.” The guy said, feeling sorry for the woman who clearly had no idea what entailed a full detox. He knew the girl was young and the way Frank just described her, she might be strong enough to go through it, but it wouldn’t be pleasant.
“Is there any way I can see her, or sit with her through the night? Please, I haven’t seen her in ten years. Please…” Emily said as she couldn’t help but feel responsible for this. She knew she should have ran farther away from her mother’s reach, it was her fault that her daughter was like this and she wouldn’t forgive herself if anything else happened to her. ‘Not now, not when I can help her.’ Emily thought as she waited for the officer’s response, her eyes continued to plead to see her daughter.
“Alright…but I need you to keep this quiet, I am not allowed to do this. And I know the chief will have my ass if he finds out.” He said as he led the way to the tank. As he opened the door he heard her gasp as she saw her 12 year old daughter on dingy floor of the detox cell, it was clear that her daughter already started the vomiting part of the detox, and by the bruises a few seizures had already occurred. He knew it would be a long night for both of them as he left the woman his extra key and went back to his desk.
Emily let the tears role down her cheeks as she saw her daughter splayed on the floor fighting a fight she never should have had to do. She went straight to the sink and grabbed a washcloth and began to clean up her daughter. She set up the room so that the can she used before would be close enough to use, but she sat her up and sat on the floor with her, leaning her daughter’s body against her own by the cot. “I am so sorry baby. But I promise…I promise I won’t fail you again. I promise.” Emily said as she continued to cry for the life her daughter had to live and her own failure as a parent to be able to save her from it.
Emily moved all of the bags that were in her car into her motel room. She didn’t know how long she would be there, but she only needed a few hours and she had enough cash to pay for the day and then continue on. She again failed her daughter, but she wouldn’t fail at finding the son of a bitch who shot her in cold blood. She looked herself in the bathroom mirror as she splashed her face with some water. She knew she was a shadow of the person she was but that didn’t matter anymore, her life and everything she came to work for meant nothing. She sighed as she kept trying to talk herself into completely believing that, it was still hard to do because every time she closed her eyes she saw a certain blonde she knew she would never see again. And every time she did it broke her heart a little more. As she finished up getting ready for bed she turned off the light.
From the Honda they watched as the light went off in the room, and waited. They were nowhere near where they needed her to be, but soon they would be and Emily Prentiss would be stopped.
“Yes I know, we are close, but I need a few more miles before I can. No I will take care of her. Yes I know…no don’t. Yes…believe me. It will be taken care of.” The person in the black Civic Honda said before they opened the car door and got out. The chloroform clothe in one hand and their keys in another. It would be difficult to do, but it had to be done now. They broke out their lock pick and got into the room quietly.
