Femslash For Fans at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine is a call-in Internet radio show I've been hosting for the past five months, devoted to Internet femslash fan communities and the authors who write there. The goal is to give femslash fanfic authors the chance to be interviewed over the medium of live audio, and readers the chance to hear what their favorites have to say.
Having finished a very entertaining series of discussions in recent weeks of popular femslash pairings in TV crime drama like "Women's Murder Club", "NCIS", and "CSI: Miami", we move back to one of the very first great femslash fandoms to hit the Internet, LIVE, airing Thursday, October 8th, at 10:00 PM EST:
Back to the Beginning - The Rainbow Writers, Willow/Tara, and What "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Did For Femslash Today
We'll be taking a trip back in time to one of the first, greatest canon lesbian pairings on network television - Willow/Tara from the WB's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". It was all the way back during the 1999-2000 season when we first were charmed by Tara Maclay in "Hush", when we first fell in love along with Willow Rosenberg in "New Moon Rising". A year later we cheered when they shared their first onscreen kiss in "The Body". And a year after that the righteous fury poured forth when Tara was - well, you know. We'll be talking about those days with two of the most prolific Willow/Tara authors out there, the collaborative team known as the Rainbow Writers. We'll discuss their sizable body of work, including "The Circle Series", "Safe in her Arms", and what the future holds for their readers.
You can listen to the show live through your computer speakers by following the link provided above, or you can download an .mp3 recording of the show after it airs and listen on your iPod or other mp3 player. If I ever had to pick a sequel for the movie, this would be it. While reading this "story", I wished many times I had this as a real hard copy book to carry around with me. Printing 600 pages with my home office printer, though, was not practicable. Or economical.
Despite the length, this story is not boring at all and a wonderfully entertaining read on every page. Which amounts to pure torture here and there since you want to know what's going on and where it leads, and at the same time not miss a word of what's being said or done. I found myself reluctant to let go and stop reading when I had to, i.e. when I was hungry, tired or had to go to work. The flow is exceptional and although I was determined to keep an eye on how it's done, on the technique, I drowned in the story after reading just a few sentences.
If I told you what it's about you might think it's too weird and not want to read it. Really. I myself didn't think it would make for a very good story. But it does. The dear author takes her sweet time luring you into it, getting you comfortable with the twists and turns before taking it to the next step. The characters are all in line and refreshingly authentic. Andy is her usually mix of naive genius and Miranda is her wonderful Meryl-self. Fanfiction usually lives off making the characters take a different turn in a canon situation or exploring their behavior in different circumstances. This story is no exception, but in my opinion it's done very well and gently and the reader is smoothly guided into this alternative direction and turn of events. I am a very picky and sensitive reader with a lot of pet peeves and I felt appropriately pampered and never once felt uncomfortable or jostled or hit by a brick.
As the rating suggests, there are some, uh, mature scenes. Oh hell, THERE IS SEX. Quite a bit of it. And all those who feel they have trouble writing sex scenes should go and at least read those. I may delete this sentence later, but those were some of the scenes where I tried to notice how it's written and failed utterly.
There is also a short sequel to this story, wrapping it up in an unusual but fitting way, giving the reader some peace of mind and completing the picture of Miranda and Andy's relationship, which is so carefully, determinedly and IMO authentically developed in the main story.
For all those who are reluctant to dive into this fandom with this pairing because of their age difference this might be either the one exception worth making or the entry into a fandom with some interesting characters who are fun to play with and read about.
