GL - Movie Night - Part 49

Title: Movie Night
Author: critic2000
Pairing: Olivia/Natalia
Rating: PG-13 to start, for violence (non-sexual).
Disclaimer: I don’t own the Guiding Light characters, they belong to CBS and Proctor and Gamble.
Summary: This is set in the spring of 2009. I’ve taking some liberties with the storyline, mainly Natalia never slept with Frank, hence no engagement etc. So our girls have been just continuing forward raising Emma and getting closer to each other though they are still technically just friends, but that may change… This is a hurt/comfort story so they are headed on a rough ride.
Author’s Note: This is my first fan fiction so please be gentle. This would not have been possible if not for the persistent nudging and awesome editing of my beta/great friend croftlara. Comments are welcome.

Chapter 49

Olivia was still on her knees struggling for breath as Natalia continued to rub her back and answer the few questions Jeffrey asked, “Yes, the ambulance is on the way. I think I can make it there on my own, if I have to I can take her car. Okay, I’ll meet you at the hospital.”

After another quick call to the night manager to ask her to wait at the employee entrance for the ambulance Natalia hung up and dropped the phone. Suddenly Natalia remembered something about giving someone who might be having a heart attack an Aspirin so she stood, went over to the nightstand and quickly went through what was still laying on the table. In all of this please tell me we have Aspirin. When she couldn’t find any on the table she dropped to the floor and looked through the bottles she had knocked over, finding nothing there she looked around the room, “Where else? Purse.” Natalia pulled herself up using the bed and panting heavily she easily found Olivia’s still beeping purse and dumped it out on the bar. Spreading out the contents with her hands she came across a little bottle of Aspirin, snatching it from the counter she staggered her way back over to Olivia who was now sitting upright still clutching her chest and trying to catch her breath.

“Okay sweetheart, open your mouth.”

Olivia’s forehead creased. What?

“It’s okay Olivia, I just need you to swallow something for me. Open your mouth please.” I don’t want to have to do it for you.

Trusting Natalia completely, Olivia complied.

Natalia pulled out one little white pill and put it in Olivia’s mouth, rubbing the distressed woman’s throat until she was confident that the pill had been swallowed. Looking anxiously toward the door she asked herself, “Where is that ambulance?”

Olivia started to list to one side as her body was becoming incapable of sitting up without help.

“Whoa, okay… I’ve got you.” Natalia moved in behind Olivia to catch her and held her in place so she wouldn’t fall.

Natalia could feel Olivia’s body struggling for breath and growing weaker by the moment. Please God, we need help. Come on Natalia think of something. I know. “Olivia I need you to stay with me, stay awake okay? Hey, do you remember that meeting you had to host at the farmhouse for Decker? It was so last minute and you weren’t feeling well, we had no food and nothing to serve it on even if we did!”

Natalia heard a whisper of a laugh come from Olivia, so she continued.

“Thank God for Buzz… sort of, though it was his fault in the first place. You had Emma do all of those crazy things to entertain them while I cooked my chicken and rice. I’m sure you do remember that, it was a crazy night.” Natalia had tears in her eyes.

“We got through that together, you and me. We’re a good team. We both have our strengths and we just fit. You’re going to be okay Olivia. I know this because one of my strengths is making sure you’re okay.”

Suddenly, there was a banging on the door.

Natalia’s head jerked up, “They’re here.” Sliding out from behind Olivia and laying her down so she wouldn’t fall, Natalia whispered, “I’ll be right here, I’m just letting them in.” She then rushed as quickly as possible to let the paramedics in.

Natalia opened the door to find Remy and his partner with their stretcher. “Oh Remy,” Natalia breathed, “She’s over here, I think she might be having a heart attack.”

“We’ll take good care of her.” Remy assured as he and his partner maneuvered into the room and over to the supine woman.

Natalia stood back and watched as they tended to her friend. While the paramedics took her blood pressure and listened to her heart, Natalia wanted Olivia to know she wasn’t alone, “I’m here Olivia, you’ll be okay.” Tears leaked from Natalia’s eyes as she watched the men move Olivia onto the gurney, she now had an oxygen mask on and an IV in her arm but she looked so pale and frightened. As they wheeled the gurney by her Natalia reached out and touched Olivia’s hand, “Honey, I’m coming with you.” For a moment Olivia’s wide green eyes struggled to focus until they found their brown watery counterparts. Olivia nodded her head. I know. It was all Natalia could do not to break down right there but she knew there would be plenty of time for that later.

Natalia noticed Remy looking at her, “I’m coming with you.”

“I can’t take you in the ambulance, it’s against policy.”

“Screw policy Remy, I’m coming, you know it so don’t argue.”

Remy didn’t want to argue nor did they have the time, “Fine. Let’s go.”

“Okay what do I need? Phone, keys, wallet, Olivia’s purse.” She shoved the items from the emptied purse back into it then grabbed Olivia’s Blackberry, she put on a long coat over her pajamas and using the wall for support she followed behind the paramedics and her best friend, thanking God for the adrenaline that was giving her the ability to move as quickly as she was and keeping her relatively pain-free.

The Beacon night manager saw the group coming down the hall toward the exit and immediately rushed to Natalia, “What happened to Ms. Spencer?”

“I don’t know, she might be having a heart attack.” She spoke to the woman across from her briefly before she reached out and clung to her for support, “Jessica, I need your help to get me into the ambulance.” I don’t know how much further I can go but I have to do this for Olivia.

Jessica, the manager, nodded and maneuvered Natalia’s hand to her arm and guided the frightened woman to the ambulance.

Natalia watched as Olivia was lifted into the vehicle. “It’s going to be okay Olivia, they’re going to take good care of you. I’m right here.”

She was ready to climb into the back but was stopped by Remy’s arm, “No, I’ll take you but you have to sit in the front.”

Natalia nodded, “Olivia, I’m riding in the front but I’m still here.” She moved around to the passenger side and was helped in by Jessica.

Jessica was about to close the door for Natalia when she offered, “If you or Ms. Spencer need anything, please call.”

“Thank you Jessica, really.”

The door was closed and Natalia barely had her seatbelt on when the ambulance began to speed off toward Cedar’s Hospital.

The lights of the ambulance signaled their arrival at the hospital, the siren silenced so as to not agitate their patient any more than she already was. The vehicle pulled to a stop and the back doors flew open.

“What have we got?” Came the call from the doctor awaiting their arrival.

For Olivia it was all a blur, Remy’s response, the words, ‘transplant patient and pacemaker then some numbers’ were all she could make out. She was being pulled from the ambulance and talked to very loudly by a man in a white coat. She tried to respond as best she could as they moved her roughly onto a bed and started removing her clothes.

Everything was happening so fast and she couldn’t focus. She closed her eyes and thought, this can’t be happening… I can’t put my family… my baby, through this again. Think Olivia. You have a will… Natalia knows where everything is… Jellybean… Oh God… my little girl… you’ll be okay, Natalia knows… she knows what to do… Ava… I love you, why haven’t I told you that enough? Olivia could feel herself losing control. Natalia. It’s okay, no matter what; Natalia will take care of everything. Olivia held the image in her mind of the one person she knew she could count on for better or worse… Natalia.

Natalia’s heart raced as she gingerly lowered herself from the ambulance, desperate to be with Olivia and find out what was going on. She could see a doctor and nurses already rushing her into the hospital so she hurried to try and keep up.

Olivia you have to be okay, you just have to be. I don’t want to have to explain to our daughter that her mommy’s sick again, please let this be nothing.

She followed the stretcher into the ambulance entrance and was stopped rather abruptly by a nurse.

“I’m sorry you can’t go any further, we’ll need you to go to the waiting room.”

“No, you don’t understand she needs me.” Natalia pulled the pacemaker beeper from Olivia’s purse and punctuated her words with a shake of the alarm, “She… needs… me.”

The nurse reached out and took the beeper from Natalia. “Ma’am, I do understand that and right now the best thing you can do is just wait.”

“But… I… ” Natalia’s eyes started to fill.

The nurse put her hand on Natalia’s arm, “Ma’am, I’m know you’re scared but it will take some time for the doctor to assess the situation, you look like you need to sit down, can you make it over to the waiting area?

Seeing that the nurse had no intention of budging Natalia relented but not before making another request, “Yes, I think I can make it on my own. Do you know if Dr. Rick on duty?”

“Pardon me?”

“Dr. Bauer, he’s her doctor, please, is he here?”

“He’s not on duty in the ER ma’am.”

“Can you call him then? He’ll want to be here for Olivia.”

“I’m sure the doctor with her now will take just as good care of her.”

“No, it’s got to be Rick... he knows her… he’d want to be here…” Natalia was nearly frantic. I know you’re doing your job but you don’t understand.

“Ma’am, please just sit, calm down and we’ll get you some information as soon as it’s available.”

Natalia knew a brush off when she heard one and ignoring the nurse resolved to call Rick herself. “Fine, thank you.” Natalia moved over to the first chair and pulled out Olivia’s phone, to heck with you hospital policy, that bank of phones is just too far away.

“Rick? It’s Natalia. I’m at the hospital with Olivia, I think she’s having a heart attack. Will you come?” Natalia’s voice sounded small and full of emotion.

“Heart attack? I’m on my way.” Rick didn’t take the time to ask any further questions the sound of Natalia’s voice spoke volumes.

Natalia looked at the phone after she heard the click indicating it had been disconnected on Rick’s end. Okay so Rick is on his way, I’ve called Jeffrey, is there anybody else I should be calling?

Natalia was so lost in thought she didn’t notice as Jeffrey and Reva came rushing into the ER.

Reva however immediately spotted Natalia sitting alone in a row of chairs looking worried, tired and staring at the phone in her hand like it was the first time she had ever seen one. “Jeffrey.” Reva nudged her husband and pointed to Natalia.

When they reached the somber looking woman Jeffrey touched her shoulder, startling Natalia out of her thoughts. “Jeffrey? Thank you for coming.” Natalia made a move to stand but instead Jeffrey bent to give her a kiss on the cheek and a hug.

“Of course, we’d come. Are you okay?”

Natalia sniffled and tried not to cry, “I’m okay.” Looking up she noticed Reva and felt a pang of jealousy, “Reva.”

Reva gave a thin smile and hugged Natalia before she sat down next to her and took her hand. “What happened?”

“We were sleeping and her phone rang, it was just Phillip checking in, but Olivia was… in a deep sleep.” How do I tell them she was passed out? Natalia dropped her head, “She was upset earlier in the evening and… well you know Olivia.” Natalia looked meaningfully at Reva before continuing, “I know she must’ve fallen asleep sometime after I did.”

Passed out more like it, damn it Olivia. Reva looked down, knowing exactly why Olivia was upset. Not knowing what Olivia may have told Natalia about where she had been she didn’t bring up their discussion earlier in the day.

Jeffrey put his arm around the young Latina in comfort as she continued, “I was just sitting there on the edge of the bed after I talked to Phillip and Emma and she had her nightmare.” Looking up she found Reva’s eyes, both women understanding the gravity of that statement.

“One minute she was asleep, the next she was sitting up and repeating ‘No’ over and over. I tried to comfort her but she moved away from me.”

Natalia noticed the doctor who accompanied Olivia into the ER talking to a nurse so she hesitated to see if he was coming over to her. When he turned and walked away from the desk and out of sight, she continued her story, “She was really upset… she started clutching her chest. I thought… I mean she looked like she was having a heart attack, she was pale, sweating and she couldn’t catch her breath. When her pacemaker beeper went off...” Natalia paused, “that’s when I called 911 and you Jeffrey.”

“That must have been very scary for you,” Reva said.

Natalia nodded toward Reva, “I… she’s going to be okay… she’ll be fine… right?” Jeffrey squeezed her shoulder for comfort as tears filled Natalia’s brown eyes and she blinked them back, unwilling to allow her fear to get the better of her.

No one had noticed Rick rushing into the ER until he was right in front of their little group.

“Oh Rick.” Natalia struggled to her feet and gave the doctor a hug. “Thank you so much for coming.”

“Of course.” Rick acknowledged Reva and Jeffrey with a quick ‘hi’ before he turned back to Natalia, “I’ll go see what I can find out and come back to talk to you, okay?”

“Why don’t you sit down, you look like you could fall over at any second. I’ll be right back.”

Natalia sat back down and watched with concern etched across her face as Rick went through the security entrance in search of Olivia.
