Natalia got up an hour early, before Olivia’s alarm even went off. She had a few cups of coffee and then got in her car and drove to the cemetery where she had Nick buried.
“I know how you always thought I was hot as Gus Artoro.” Nick said as he looked at his wife. He wore the look that he used wear when he and Natalia went undercover. “I have to admit we always looked great as Nikki and Gus Artoro.”
“This isn’t a joking matter Nicolas.” Natalia said as serious as she possibly could, but couldn’t stop the slight smile from forming on her lips. He always did have a way of making her smile.
“It’s not, but the real question for me is, why are you running away? If I remember correctly, which I do, you don’t run away from anything.” The ghost said to his living wife as he sat by and watched her drive to his resting place.
“It’s not right Nick you died only, God, only five months ago. I can’t… I can’t do this. No I can’t feel this; not now, not yet!” Natalia said as she got closer to his grave and began to pace.
“Why! Why not Nat? Love is complicated, it’s rare, it’s illogical, and it’s strong. It’s stronger than anything we can fathom. It’s how we got Rafe and it’ll be how you move on. We loved each other at one point but I think you and I both know it was never meant to be. We both stayed together for Rafe, the one thing we did right. We were meant to be his parents, but I think we were both meant to be something else, meant for someone else, and you met yours. So why are you running away from her?”
“I’m not, I’m not running away from her.” Natalia said as she stopped in her tracks towards his grave and looked away.
“Yeah, and when was the last time you couldn’t look me in the eye when you said something?” Nick said with a knowing smile.
“Don’t do this Nicky, I can’t… not now, it’s not right.” Natalia said as she began to slowly walk to his grave again.
“Why not, I know better than anyone how short life is and believe me when I say ignoring this won’t make it go away. You feel something, and I won’t say what it is because you need to look into it. You need to give it a chance.” Nick said as he moved closer to Natalia.
“Did you ever wonder what would have happened if things were different, if you had to stay undercover as Gus in that one assignment or if we never would have gotten married?” Natalia asked wondering for a minute how her life would have been different.
“I think we still would be in this place, maybe not like this but is it so bad to be falling in love?” Nick asked just looking at his wife and smiling as if he knew what was to come.
Natalia’s smile signaled her agreement, it wasn’t so bad, and she put the flowers on his grave. But she knew agreeing and acting were two different courses, one of which would be harder than the other.
Olivia woke up and went downstairs to find a note by Natalia saying that she went to work early. She looked around and found all the food she made for her and Emma for breakfast. She felt the tear go down her face and she viciously wiped it away. She didn’t want to ruin the way things were but it was too late for them to go back. She had no idea what would happen or even how to explain it to her daughter if Natalia wanted them to move out.
“Mommy where’s Natalia? Is she ok?” Emma asked as she looked for Natalia.
“I don’t know, I think she had to go in early for her job. Don’t worry we’ll see her tonight sweetie and then she can tell us all about her day.” Olivia said, trying to even convince herself.
“Should we visit her today at work, what about bringing her lunch? It looked like she didn’t pack a lunch.” Emma asked with her hopeful brown eyes.
“I don’t know sweetie, she might be out at that time…” Olivia said quietly.
“Well what about I ask Frank if she’ll be there at noon?” Emma asked as she went to the phone.
“Yeah, ok sweetie I think that would be a great idea.” Olivia conceded to her daughter’s wishes and knew that she wouldn’t be looking forward to having an uncomfortable lunch.
“Why is it a slow day? It figures that that would be my luck. So come on Remy hurry, go piss Frank off.” Natalia said to her partner.
“No thanks Rivera; you could probably piss him off more than I could. But then again the last person that pissed him off he ended up dating for a year, so…” Remy said before he could finish he felt his partner hit his arm hard. “Ooww!”
“Hey Rivera! You got some visitors.” One of the desk cops shouted from his desk.
“Thanks Jim… I’ll get you back later
“Hey Remy there’s a fax for Rivera, where’d she go?” Johnson asked as he went to her desk.
“Out, and no don’t give it to me, I lose things like crazy.” Remy said as he watched Johnson shrug and leave it on her desk. Before long the paper got swallowed up by older paper work.
