A half hour later both were back at the precinct and Natalia and Frank were in an argument.
“No, no NO! You will go to the hospital because it’s police policy. You were hurt on the job, I don’t care how minute you think it is. There is no…” Frank shouted at his injured officer.
“Frank…FRANK! I’m fine, see I’m fine. Look… just look ok, I’m fine I can clean up myself. All I need is a ride home. No, no. Look I won’t go to the hospital again. I feel just fine.” Natalia said as she did her best to stop Frank from speaking. HE was bugging the shit out of her.
“No, you’ll go to the hospital because it’s an order.” Frank said as he saw Remy enter his office. “Did you call the backup?”
“Yup they’ll be here in twenty.” Remy said as he left the Chief’s office.
“Look, since you got my relief coming in early I can go home and rest, and then I’ll be fine.” Natalia said as she gathered her things and tried to leave the station.
“No… no. Look you need to get checked out and I won’t take…” Frank said but knew that he didn’t even need to finish it as he saw Olivia walking through the doors. She must have flown there, but he was willing to look past it if it meant getting his officer to a hospital to be properly checked out. “Good, my relief is here.”
Natalia was confused at what Frank said until she turned and saw an angry brunette making a b-line straight towards her.
“Alright, we’re leaving now. I don’t want to hear a word. Thanks Frank, I’ll make sure she gets tomorrow off.” Olivia said as she practically dragged Natalia out of the police station.
“What the… Olivia, let me go. What are you doing?” Natalia asked, even though she had a pretty good idea of what her answer would be.
“I’m taking you to see Rick. And don’t argue with me. Not now, not when you… Jesus what did that bastard do to you? It looks like he hit you with a crow bar.” Olivia said as she gingerly touched the bruised and swollen skin.
“I’m fine… Olivia I’m fine. I just want to go home and shower tonight off. Trust me…” Natalia said but was interrupted by the upset woman.
“No, no I’m taking you and that’s final. Don’t even try to question it. We’re going tonight.” Olivia said as she continued to pull Natalia out the door and towards her car. She got in the driver’s side and heard the passenger’s side closed with a bang. The ride to the hospital was quiet, and oddly so was the emergency room. There weren’t as many people in there as there normally was but there was still a little wait.
They finally were able to get a room about an hour later. A few seconds later Rick walked in.
“Well it’s about time you got here. Remy called as soon as you were hit, I was expecting you hours ago.” Rick said as he looked at the wound. “Well, it’s a good one, but not bad. Do you have any dizziness, nausea, or trouble speaking or standing?”
“A little dizzy but other than that I’m alright. I would really like to go home and get some sleep though.” Natalia said with some hostility.
“Yeah well, I would like them to take a CAT scan and an MRI just in case. And I think it’s important that someone keep an eye out on you while you sleep.” Rick said as he looked at Olivia.
“Alright, alright as long as you say I can go home, shower, and sleep.” Natalia insisted as she was already off the exam table.
“Yeah, yeah, I already have the papers drawn up so you can sign them on your way out. Just stop getting into trouble. And I want to see you both back in a week for a checkup. Alright I have other patients who want to see me so you’ll have to excuse me.” Rick said as he left.
The nurse handed Natalia a pack of pills with a note from Dr. Rick saying to try to take some of them for the pain. Natalia smiled, knowing she won’t take any and followed Olivia right out of the hospital. It took about thirty minutes to get back to the farm house and another twenty under the hot stream of the shower. Natalia let the water run down her slightly tanned body. She felt every muscle in her body tense and then try to relax under the warmth of the stream but her head continue to feel like it was going to explode. As she put on her robe, she splayed on her bed, and tried to sleep. Before long she felt a warm hand on her thigh and a warm rag on her head.
“Shh, it’s just me. Don’t move; I’m trying to clean off the excess blood that didn’t come off in the shower. And then you’re going to take the pills that Rick gave me and I’m going to sleep in here and keep an eye on you as you sleep. And that is final.” Olivia said incontestably as she lightly cleaned the wound. She bit her lip to keep from screaming at Natalia. She was so mad at Natalia for getting injured, neglecting to call her, and not going to the hospital.
Natalia looked Olivia in the eye and could see the concern and anger. “Look, I’m fine. Just trust me, you don’t…” Natalia started before she was interrupted.
“No, no we made a deal! We made a deal. You said you would be honest with me. All I wanted was the truth, I know we aren’t at work but that was the deal. That’s all I wanted, and you go and just... You have to be careful, you need to be careful. You shouldn’t go risking your life for nothing. People care about you, love you and I can’t… I won’t let you kill yourself. I won’t” Olivia said as she looked away from Natalia.
“Do you remember what I said when I told about how I felt? That there are things about me that would make this hard; well this is one of them. What I do is who I am. That is the one thing I’ve always known. What I do is, well the closest word would be a calling.” Natalia said as she took Olivia’s hand and stopped her from cleaning her wound. “The only thing I can say is that I do my best to stop those who hurt others, but the one thing that is constant is that the only way to stop them is to put myself in harm’s way. I’ll always do what I can to stop them before they hurt me or anyone else. But that’s all I can promise you, and that’s the truth.” Natalia said as she held Olivia’s hand to her heart.
Olivia looked into Natalia’s eyes and saw something she had never seen before. She was born to help others, that’s why she was more than willing to put herself in harm’s way, even with her loved ones worrying about her constantly. She knew this was the one thing Natalia would never give up on. “You need your rest. Go to sleep, I’ll be in the chair.”
“No I don’t need you to watch…”
“No, I’m going to watch over you. There’s no choice in the matter. I’m going to make sure you’re ok tonight.” Olivia said as she went towards the chair.
“Well then you should at least be comfortable.” Natalia said as she moved over on the bed and made room for her guardian.
Olivia hesitated but then slowly moved up towards the bed. She laid on her right side and facing Natalia’s back. Olivia’s arms wrap around Natalia’s torso and her warmth seeped into Natalia’s back lightly lulling her to sleep. She felt Natalia move her hand close to her heart.
“I can promise you this; I’ll always do everything I can to come home to you. I promise.” Natalia said before she let a peaceful sleep claim her.
